Client Overview
A residential client in Flushing, NY, reached out to The Mudjacking Contractor for structural support enhancements in their basement. They had concerns regarding a removed basement column that previously supported a critical spandrel beam, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the space.
Project Scope
Our team of skilled mudjacking contractors proposed a comprehensive structural reinforcement solution designed to restore and enhance the load-bearing capacity of the basement beam. The goal was to provide robust support by installing a high-capacity adjustable steel column installation, ensuring the beam would be properly reinforced and fit snugly into place. The beam that we proposed to install was integral to the safety and integrity of the entire property.
Challenges
The project presented several challenges:
- Structural Support Restoration: The previous column removal left the basement spandrel beam unsupported, necessitating careful examination of both the beam and substrate.
- Limited Access and Precision Installation: Installing a steel column within an already finished basement space required precision to avoid unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding structure.
- Potential Beam Damage: If existing cracks were found in the beam, additional reinforcements would be necessary, increasing project scope and costs.
Solution Implemented
To address these challenges and meet the client’s needs, our team devised a strategic approach involving these key steps:
- Preparation and Exposure of Beam and Substrate:
- Our contractors began by carefully cutting open the drywall covering to expose the wood beam and gain full access to the beam and floor.
- We then exposed the concrete substrate by opening the floor below, creating a stable area for column installation.
- Steel Column Installation:
- A 4-inch diameter, adjustable steel column with a capacity of 29,000 pounds was selected to ensure optimal support for the spandrel beam.
- Hydraulic jacks were employed to carefully push the beam up, allowing us to achieve a snug fit between the column and beam.
- The new column was installed with plates fastened at the top and bottom for added stability and load distribution.
- Optional Beam Reinforcement:
- During installation, our team inspected the beam for cracks. In the event of cracking, our protocol included using steel plate splints, extending 12 inches beyond the crack on both sides. This reinforcement measure would ensure the longevity and integrity of the support, although no additional repairs to the floor above were included in this estimate.
Project Timeline
The entire project was completed within the projected timeline, ensuring minimal disruption to the client’s property.
